Next weekend
Saying that something will happen nexet weekend can be very confusing. What exactly does “next weekend” mean?
Say it’s thursday (it actually is, but that doesn’t matter). Now read this: “It will happen this weekend.” and “It will happen next weekend.” Is there any difference between those sentences at all? This weekend is obviously the closest one, but what about the next weekend? For me personally it’s the same, but some people perceive it as the weekend after this one. It’s similar with the last weekend: “It happened last weekend.” and “It happened this weekend.” Well actually I think that there’s no argument there, the last weekend just has to be the last one, or do you think that the last weekend is the weekend before the last weekend? ;-)
I don’t know how this works in various languages, but at least in czech it’s very unclear. I experienced several misunderstandings because of that. What’s your point of view? (and please don’t pretend that you are not here, it’s getting tiring..)
PS: When I write that I’ll post something tomorrow, it means that I’ll maybe post something during the next week (whatever “next week” means).

Last v angličtině neznamená jen poslední, ale také minulý (předchozí). Takže “last weekend” rozhodně nemusí být “the last one”. :-)
Výraz “tento” se vztahuje na nejbližší víkend v daném směru – dopředu nebo dozadu. “Minulý” a “příští” na víkend po/před tímto v daném směru. Je to docela jednoduchý. Z toho samozřejmě plyne, že výraz “tento víkend” je bez určení směru nejednoznačný, ale s tím většinou problém není. Ve normální větě je minulost indikována minulým časem:
> Kdy jsi tam byl? Tento víkend?
A budoucnost samozřejmě budoucím časem:
> Kdy tam půjdeš? Tento víkend?
Mate mě, že tě to mate, a mám strach, že jsem zapoměl na nějaký mezní případ, kdy mnou uvedená teorie naplatí, ale teď fakt na žádný nemůžu přijít. :D

If it is a saturnday, or sunday and you say “this weekend” it means something else then saying “next weekend”. If it is monday – thursday it means the same. I don’t know about friday ;)

Pro upřesnění: Je pondělí 13.11. Řeknu-li příští víkend, mám na mysli dny 24.-26. 11.
Problémy s tímto nastávají IMHO jen tehdy, když zrovna je víkend. To je třeba si na to dát větší pozor. :)

I agree with benerit :) At least that’s how I perceive it… (another reason to move to Poland, people are sane and know what “next weekend” means :thumbup1:)
Keo: Kdyz zrovna je vikend, tak je to uplne jasne, to je pristi vikend ten nejblizsi, ktery bude, o tom se nebudu hadat. Ale kdyz v pondeli reknu “pristi vikend bude akce”, myslim tim, ze bude ten nejblizsi vikend, ktery bude… A kdyz reknu 13.11. pristi vikend, tak tim rozhodne myslim 18.-19.
